An exclusive preview of early American coinage we’ve recently acquired. These silver coins were minted by hand in the first years of the Republic.

She symbolizes the new nation’s economic sovereignty and power.

In contrast to European coins that featured reigning monarchs, our Founding Fathers chose Lady Liberty to symbolize our hard-won freedom. This Draped Bust Silver Dollar is based on a portrait of Anne Willing Bingham, considered the most beautiful woman of her day. A relative of Aaron Burr and daughter of the president of the First Bank of the United States, Anne was wealthy, influential, and well-connected, both politically and personally. She regularly exchanged letters with admirer and confidant Thomas Jefferson and hosted early American salons attended by George Washington, John Jay, Alexander Hamilton, and other members of the Federalist Party at her “Mansion House.” Through her efforts, the governing ideas of our new nation were debated, discussed, affirmed, and finalized.

The identical designs of the early silver dollar and half dollar demonstrate not only America’s sophisticated artistic taste, but its might and prowess. To complement the beauty of Anne Bingham as Lady Liberty, a large, intimidating eagle was designed for the Large “Heraldic” Eagle reverse, in a proud display of America’s new economic sovereignty and independence. When the silver dollar was discontinued, this half dollar went on to become one of America’s most successful coins. As the go-to coin for large transactions and bank reserves, half dollars from this time period didn’t circulate much among the population. Today, these coins don’t exhibit the wear of a typical circulated coin and are closer to pristine condition.
